熊本城主、加藤清正。今もなお「清正公（せいしょうこう）さん」の名で親しまれる加藤清正の菩提寺が日蓮宗の名刹、本妙寺です。天正13年（1585年）に、清正公が父の菩提寺として大阪に建立したものを、肥後入国後、熊本城内に移し、清正公の逝去後、さらに現在の中尾山中腹に移建されました。「胸突雁木（むなつきがんぎ）」と呼ばれる急勾配の石段を上ると、清正公がまつられている浄池廟（じょうちびょう）に行き着きます。『御宿 廣嶋屋』は熊本の歴史深い加藤清正浄池廟の下に位置しています。
